The Incident Under The Overpass: Book One Of The Traiteur Trilogy by Anne McClane

Lacey Becnel is still recovering from the death of her beloved husband Fox, and the subsequent revelations of his infidelity, when she wakes one morning to find her self under an overpass in New Orleans, naked, with an unconscious and injured stranger lying next to her. As she starts to piece together what happened, she starts to realise that there is more than can easily be explained in the events of the previous night.

Lacey is a delightful character, well drawn and full of humour, as well as the sadness and confusion of her recent loss. She is drawn to the stranger she helped, Nathan, even though it seems that there might be a lot that he’s not telling her, and she’s not sure that she likes her attraction to him, or trusts it.

Into this mix is thrown a cast of interesting characters, her best friend Angele, her husbands Aunt Tonti, who might know more than she’s giving away, and her dog Ambrose, who seems to almost speak English. All of them are well rounded, funny and potentially have their own agendas. Because there’s a lot more going on in this book than a woman finding out she can heal. Where have her powers come from? Why now? And why do the people around her seem to know more than they’re letting on? And also, who might want Nathan dead?

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the location, McClane really evoked a sense of place, and invests her characters with spark and individuality. It’s a pleasure to read this book and immerse yourself in the humour and the mystery, as well as the will-they-won’t-they romance. I did feel that the book could have been a little tighter, greater urgency about finding out the mystery surrounding her powers and the mystery-thriller plot could really elevate this book, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying the story.

As it’s the first in the series, I look forward to reading the next book and finding out where it’s all going.

Read It If: you like your supernatural romances set in New Orleans. A delight.

This book was sent to me by the author for honest review, all opinions are my own. If you’d like to purchase a copy, you’ll find it on Amazon HERE in either Kindle or Paperback editions. You can also find out more about the author, Anne McClane HERE.
