RuPaul’s Drag Race started out as a small reality TV show, and wound up reaching many, inspiring people, making them laugh and bringing them drama, creativity and drag right into their homes and hearts. In this book, we are given a bit of history of RuPaul and the show, with loads of interviews and quotes, all pertaining to the first ten years of the show and it’s impact on us and the people in it.
Because the book is styled as an oral history, the book is broken into chapters with an introduction, and then loads of quotes from names and faces you’ll know from watching the show. Some people are conspicuously absent, and it feels more like quotes and straight interviews. This means that as you read, it’s not supersmooth to get into, it’s a bit bitsy.
That said, RuPaul is an icon and the show has changed drag from behind the curtains to front and center, something fun with a focus on life affirming positivity. And this book is all about celebrating that, and being a book for fans of the show and people who want to see a bit of the behind the scenes drama and gossip. In that sense, this book delivers. There’s not a load of in depth stuff here, the book is a bit fluffy, shall we say, and yet, I think this one will really please fans, and is a must read for drag race aficionados. It’s good fun.
Read It If: a light and fun read, this is a great book for fans and one that would make an excellent gift for the RuPaul’s Drag Race fan in your life, or for yourself.
