Almost every year, I set myself a reading list as a way to broaden my horizons or otherwise stretch myself a little, and make sure I don’t get into any reading ruts. There’s usually a bit of a theme, like all the books from a particular author that I haven’t read yet, or perhaps books on a particular subject.
Below you will find my reading lists. Click on the title to go to them, and you’ll find each book listed, which you then then read the review of.
The Agatha Christie Reading List.
I love Agatha Christie. Though she’s known for her detectives Poirot and Miss Marple, she also wrote standalone mysteries, the Tommy and Tuppence series, thrillers and espionage thrillers. But less well known are her works as Mary Westmacott, her religious book, her memoirs and travel book, and her supernatural influenced stories… I read them all and loved them.
My Friends Favourites
This was a fun list to read. I asked all my friends to recommend me their favourite reads, and it was a pleasantly diverse list, from Stephen King to Peter Acroyd, Ken Kesey to Anthony Doerr and more.
The Alice Hoffman Reading List
Alice Hoffman, perhaps best known for her Practical Magic series, is one of the author’s who is a must read for me. She has been a writer for decades, and it’s been wonderful to read her work and see her body of work from her very first book to her most recent. She often employs magic realism, which I really enjoy, but not always. I love the way she writes like a storyteller, a sense of the fairytale or mythic in the everyday.
Terry Pratchett’s Discworld.
Floating through space, the great turtle A’Tuin moves, with four elephants balanced on her back, carrying the Discworld… Terry Pratchett’s much beloved fantasy series is many things: hilarious, wild, satirical, down to earth, clever, layered and all round wonderful. There’s approximately 41 books in this series, so this was a longer list, but one that’s been a delight to explore. I’ve included all the titles, read in order, and some notes about my favourite characters or story cycles within the series.
