Set in the last four years of the Jewish occupation of the Masada fortress in ancient Israel in the time of the Roman occupation, this book tells the events of the lives of four women there who work together in the Dovecotes. I suppose most of you who have an interest in the history of …

The Ice Queen by Alice Hoffman
One of Hoffman's shorter novels, this fairytale-like story is of a girl whose impulsive wishes can curse those around her to die, and whose wrteched heart has turned to ice.Her first wish was as an eight year old girl, when she wanted her mother to stay home instead of go out to a birthday dinner, …
The Probable Future by Alice Hoffman
This one may in fact become my favourite Alice Hoffman book, though they're all pretty awesome and unique. In this story, the Sparrow family, a long line of women, have all woken up on their 13th birthday with a gift. Elinor was able to tell if someone was lying, her daughter Jenny can dream other …
Seventh Heaven by Alice Hoffman
When Nora Silk, a recently divorced mother of two, moves into a small suburb in Long Island in 1959, her single unmarried state upsets the delicate balance. It's a town where emotional mess is kept hidden and everyone is expected to keep their lawn perfect. But Nora is a beautiful carefree spirit, and though she …
The Drowning Season By Alice Hoffman
I couldn't put this book down, curling up with hot chocolate and reading it in one sitting! One of Hoffman's earlier books, it follows three generations of a family, from the strong Russian matriarch that has managed their lives and finances with an iron fist, to the grandaughter who longs for freedom and to follow …
Here On Earth by Alice Hoffman
A loose, modern retelling of Wuthering Heights, Alice Hoffman brings her magic touch to another book. March Murray returns home for a funeral with her teenage daughter in tow, leaving her loving husband behind. But her old life casts a spell over her, returning her to former days, and most importantly, old loves. When she …
Local Girls by Alice Hoffman
A lovely book from the author of River King and Practical Magic, this book is a coming of age story about two girls as they navigate life, love tragedy, and becoming adults. Narrated by the sharp witted Gretel, the book tells of the break up of her parents marriage, her mother and cousins search for …
Second Nature by Alice Hoffman
This beautiful, sorrowful book tells the story of a man raised by wolves, and the woman that rescues him when he's taken into the mental health system. Robin is still reeling from her split from her philandering cop husband and starting over with her teenage son in their home town, when she happens one day …
Illumination Night by Alice Hoffman
When difficult teen Jody is sent to live with her grandmother, she sets her eyes on her neighbours husband, Andre. Andres' wife, Vonny, is not blind, but the families money problems and their son Simons health are bigger problems right now. It's a story about love, loneliness and the things we leave unsaid. The characters …
Survival Lessons with writer Alice Hoffman
As you probably know, this year I've been reading all Alice Hoffman's books, which has been a lovely experience, and I'm quite sad that I've nearly read them all. Thankfully she's still writing more, with another coming out soon. Hoffman often writes about small town, suburban America, with magic realism often a theme. Her books …
